Carroll Kemp is best known as one of the co-founders of Red Car Wines and long-time winemaker for that label. In early 2018, he left Red Car to expand his role as founding winemaker at Alma Fria (“Cold Soul”) to become a partner with the founding Holtermann family and continue as winemaker.

After Estrin’s passing, Carroll Kemp continued to lead a team to improve the quality and character of the Red Car wines in his honor. The initial winemaker was Tim Spear who left to concentrate on his Clos Mimi label.

In 2008, our winemaker, Carroll Kemp, brought Old Wente cuttings from the Hyde Vineyard that were selected specifically for the small size of their clusters and mineral flavor profile and grafted just 1.28 acres to Chardonnay, while inter-planting some additional vines to reduce the spacing to 8’ x 2.5’.
