Texas luthier and entrepreneur Dave Wintz died June 25 after battling an extended illness. He was 69. Born and raised in Houston, Wintz was co-founder of the retail store Rockin’ Robin Guitars, where he designed and built Robin guitars and Rio Grande Pickups.

The company was formed in 1982 by John "Bart" Wittrock and Dave Wintz who owned the Rockin' Robin Guitar Shop at the time. Robin guitars were made in Japan by Tokai and Chushin until 1986, when their production moved to the United States.

Dec 1, 2012 · Bart Wittrock decided to bail out and return to concentrating on Rockin’ Robin, and Dave Wintz decided to learn how to make guitars. In 1987 Wintz opened the first Robin guitar factory in Houston and from that point on Robin guitars were all American-made.
Robin guitars are the brainchild of Houston native Dave Wintz. In around 1972 Wintz opened up one of the earliest vintage guitar shops in Houston , Rockin' Robin Guitars and Music, which still exists. For the next decade he bought, sold, repaired, and hot-rodded used and vintage guitars.
