Malaysia has its own set of assholes, usually clustered in and around KL city center. But there are many more who are willing to spend some time and energy for a complete stranger, which then makes this place worth living in.
The top comment by Ranjetta Poobathy is a good explanation of the online attitudes of Malaysians, IMO. It always bothers me how quickly a lot of public discussions on Facebook quickly degenerate into something on the level of monkeys flinging shit at each other.
Malaysia acts as my plan B, in case I get rejected from both NUS and NTU. But I have to say, Malaysia is a very beautiful country (have been living in KL for about 4 months now) and I would have no qualms in studying in a (coveted) university here.
