Oct 9, 2024 · About The Village of Albion. Originally called Newport, Albion changed its name in the early 1800’s due to there already being a Newport, New York. Albion is located twelve miles south of Lake Ontario along the Erie Canal.
The canal side village of Albion is the county seat and is known for it's 34 architecturally significant structures surrounding Courthouse Square. In the center of the Square is the 1858 Greek Revival style domed County Courthouse.

Albion is a village in Orleans County, New York, United States. The population was 5,637 as of the 2020 census, down 419 from the 2010 census. The village is centrally located in the county, and is partly within the towns of both Albion and Gaines. It is the county seat of Orleans County and is about 30 miles (48km) west/northwest of Rochester.
