Kovel (Ukrainian: Ковель, IPA: [ˈkɔʋelʲ] ⓘ; Polish: Kowel; Yiddish: קאוולע / קאוולי) is a city in Volyn Oblast, northwestern Ukraine. It serves as the administrative center of Kovel Raion within the oblast. Population: 67,575 (2022 estimate).
Jun 10, 2016 · Kovel - Overview. Kovel is the second most populous city in Volyn Oblast of Ukraine. One of the oldest cities in the region, it is located about 70 km northwest of Lutsk, the capital of the region, 60 km east of the border with Poland and 70 km south of the border with Belarus.
Kovel became the center of a key battle on the Eastern front because of its importance as a railroad hub, something it still is today with six rail lines radiating from the city making it the north-western locus of Ukraine's rail system.
