Vasily Vasilyevich Dokuchaev (Russian: Васи́лий Васи́льевич Докуча́ев; 1 March 1846 – 8 November 1903) was a Russian geologist and geographer who is credited with laying the foundations of soil science. The Ukrainian city of Dokuchaievsk is named after him.
Vasily Vasilyevich Dokuchayev was a Russian geomorphologist and early soil scientist. In 1872 Dokuchayev became curator of geology at the University of St. Petersburg; in 1879 he joined the geology faculty and instituted the first course in Quaternary geology taught at a university.
