Chichibu (秩父) is a city in Saitama Prefecture, known for its impressive shrines and beautiful nature, including mountains with hiking opportunities.
Chichibu is in the westernmost part of Saitama. Unlike other parts of the prefecture, it is largely mountainous and the population is concentrated in river terraces along the Arakawa River. It is Saitama's largest municipality in terms of surface area and shares borders with Tokyo, Yamanashi, Nagano and Gunma Prefectures.
Easily accessible from Tokyo, Chichibu has been a favorite getaway for Tokyo-dwellers since the 19th century because of its pristine beauty. There's a great deal to see and do in Chichibu itself, and it's also a great jumping-off point for the scenic area around the town.
Take a local JR train or shinkansen from Tokyo to Kumagaya (35 minutes, around 3500 yen by shinkansen or 70 minutes, 1170 yen by local train from Tokyo Station) and transfer to the Chichibu Railway for Chichibu (70 minutes, around 950 yen).
Situated in a beautiful natural environment with a historical atmosphere, Chichibu has a lot to offer visitors regardless of the season. In the spring you can view the grounds carpeted by Shibazakura (pink moss) flowers, which look like sakura (cherry blossoms) in Hitsujiyama Park.
