- About Shimane
Shimane Prefecture (島根県, Shimane-ken) is located along the Sea of Japan coast in the Chugoku Region. The prefectural capital is Matsue. Touristic highlights include Matsue and its castle; Izumo Taisha, Japan's oldest shrine; Iwami Ginzan, a historic silver mine; and the Adachi Art Museum with its wonderful garden.
It is home to pristine island beaches, an important former silver mine and one of Japan's holiest shrines. Shimane Prefecture stretches along the northern coast of the Chugoku region. Sparsely populated, the prefecture has stayed relatively unchanged over the years.
Shimane Prefecture is situated in the northern region of Western Japan, facing the Sea of Japan. It stretches widely from east to west, with the Oki islands located north of its shores. The land is blessed with riches both from the Sea of Japan and from the Chugoku mountain range.
