We started it because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive, or unexpected ways.
Getting Help. OpenStreetMap has several resources for learning about the project, asking and answering questions, and collaboratively discussing and documenting mapping topics.
Free and Open. OpenStreetMap is published under an open licence, that allows anyone to access, use and share the data. This creates a level playing field allowing a diverse variety of individuals, communities and organisations to contribute towards creating a shared resource.
