According to the Salasilah Raja-Raja Perak (Perak Royal Genealogy), the first Perak Sultan was the son of Sultan Mahmud Shah, the ruler of Melaka who survived the 1511 Portuguese attack. Upon Sultan Mahmud’s death in Johor, the Sultan Muda was made ruler with the title Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah II.
